  • MoMar Scene File
This new scene file of the MoMAR site highlights the recent work of Singh and others [2006] in documenting the presence of an axial magma chamber beneath the Lucky Strike Hydrothermal Field underlying the center of the 37°N segment, Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Three cross-axis and one along-axis multichannel seismic (MCS) profiles highlight magma chamber presence, seismic layer 2A and reflections from the bounding faults of the axial valley. These 2-D profiles are migrated at water velocity, so the overall size of the magma chamber at depth will diminish some, and 3-D processing has shown that the size of the magma body is further diminished with a 3-D approach (pers. comm. Violiane Combier). Both color and greyscale versions of each 2-D profile highlighted in Nature are included (just check and uncheck which profiles you want to view). A partially transparent, 40 m gridded bathymetric map of the Lucky Strike Segment is provided for overall context. This scene file will soon be updated to include results from the 3D portion of this experiment. We would like to thank Satish Singh, Hélèn Carton and Violaine Combier for providing their recent results; and IPGP Paris for partial support of this visualization project. Stay tuned...[References]
